Early Picks for Spring 09 - D&G

It is always a pleasant surprise when we shift from winter to spring in fashion. Thick and heavier garments are replaced with thin and light pieces. The warm, yet bold colours of winter fade into crisp bright colours of spring. And, let us not forget, my favourite part about spring wear, the return of white-themed ensembles. In addition to this, Spring/Summer 2009 brings back metallics. Look forward to metallic pieces streaming into the retail stores.

Over the next few days, I will be posting picks from the SS collections 09 of various labels. Let us start with D&G:

1st pick:
Whether it be a part of a chic or casual ensemble, these tailored white pants will fit in nicely. As shown on the model, this piece catches the eye, but is cohesive with the other elements of any look. The straight side-pocket with the addition of the overhanging pocket-flap provide a subtle uniqueness to the pants without taking away from their simple silhouette. These pants will also be a great addition to a full-white outfit.

2nd pick: It is time to switch the thick warm jackets with something a bit lighter. This grey striped jacket brings a refined look to a casual piece. Wear this with shorts or pants, polo or dress shirt. One nitpick though: I hate bow ties. If you want to dress up, a slim tie will suffice. The sleeve cuff of the jacket is reminiscent of the classic varsity jacket. It looks great alone, or is coupled well with the pants of the ensemble.

3rd Pick:
This hooded zip-up brings a fresh look to any casual combination. It's black accents give it a particular eye-catching design that is a great finish to any casual look. It can be combined with track pants as shown or with a loose draw-string pant.

4th Pick: Metallics have returned this season and these cropped shorts are a perfect starter to the new trend. They are a great addition for an outdoor party or day out on the yacht when the weather warms up. These shorts are easily dressed up or down: with a polo, or, for cooler days, with a shirt/sweater combo.

5th Pick: Levi's did a patent leather jacket in 08 with less less than great response. However, D&G has taken the patent leather material and created a lighter feel and slimmer silhouette in this jacket. The sweater vest underneath is also worthy of mention. Although simple in design, the red and white accents give the vest a nice clean finish. Both jacket and vest look great together and are great as separates for other combinations. I do however question the black, red, white, and navy blue combination though. It seems like the colours are somewhat in competition.

6th pick: This is one of my favourites of the collection. The red & black stripes around the V-neck collar, sleeves, and sides work flawlessly for the sweater. The way that it is combined with the thin white scarf creates a very polished look. With the low V, an open collared dress shirt would also look great underneath. If you're looking for a vesatile sweater that makes any look put-together, this is the one.

7th Pick:

Here is another combination that I would not specifically recommend. The look is too busy with the stripes in the shirt taking away from the detailing in the jacket. However, the racer jacket is a great piece which has just enough detailing without overdoing it. I would recommend a somewhat solid piece underneath that pairs with the colour palette (careful with white, as if the jacket is paired with too much white, the interesting contrasting look will be lost).

8th pick:
Sometimes simple stands out. That is exactly the case for this new twist on the the classic white dress shirt. Button it up and it works as a great shirt for any suit combination. Unbutton it and roll up the sleeves and cuff, and you have a stunning top for a smart casual look. The silky shine is also a great attribute to the piece. I'd get rid of the scarf though; add a long necklace or just leave it bare.

9th Pick: Finally the long awaited backpack has come back. This season Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce have outdone themselves with this addition to their accessories. Although big, this multipocket backpack is both stylish and great for small trips and school. You can fit all your essential items with plenty of room to spare.

10th Pick: Crocodile skin is gaining popularity among designers and these shoes combine the croc skin design with bold accents of black. These shoes are perfect to complete any clean look with a little extra sparkle.

Last Pick: No D&G SS show is complete without the signature all white suit ensembles. Of the 12 staturing models dressed in white suits, this suit combination stood out with it's clean and simple design. With the narrow and oval curve of the lapels, this is the best pick of the 12. The colour scheme of the accenting pocket square and bowtie also stand out, providing a strong finish (although I would prefer a skinny tie over bow tie).

I'd also like to mention that the picks were based on suitable items for everyday wear. There were many other formal looks that grazed the runway that are worthy of attention, so check out the collection for yourself.

Has Boxing Day lost its sparkle?

The States have Black Friday, and Canada has Boxing Day - one day every year where people push, shove and, this year, even kill other people to snatch the year's best deals. Anything from clothes to shoes go on big promotional deals up to a spine-tingling 70% off. So Boxing Day can be thought of as the most long-anticipated day for fashionistas looking to save some big bucks.... or is it?

Due to greedy retailers wanting an extra helping of the enormous revenue generated on Boxing day, many stores have adopted the "Boxing Week" promotional period instead of just the Boxing Day alone. So, for those that wait patiently till Boxing day, the best sizes, styles, and colours will have already been snagged by the shopaholics that catch the sale on the first day. Have these retailers dropped the hype for the once sacred day?

The answer is yes and no.

Yes, some will keep a closer attention starting a week before Boxing Day for any signs of a Boxing Week Sale. For these people, Boxing Day moves to whenever the sale starts and the actual date of December 26 means much less to them than it once did.

No, since some stores still follow the annual Boxing Day sale tradition and only offer special sales on that day. Even if some stores have already began the sale in advance, shoppers are guaranteed that almost all the stores in the mall or centre will have noticable price-reductions. One more fact is that many high end stores have previously never followed the Boxing Day sales. One example is Holt Renfrew, which has price reductions in early December followed by a 25% off regular fall/winter items sale (this year on Dec 20).
Edit: HR reduced sale items from 40% to 50% off for Boxing Day

As a shopaholic myself, along with the fact that I work in the retail industry, Boxing Day no longer gives me the exhilarating feeling of adrenaline that I remember from my younger years. I do however keep my eye out for deals (whether they be Boxing Week or Boxing Day).

Besides, in the fashion world, when items go on sale, they are already reaching the end of their prime - you should already be preparing your wardrobe for the next season. Shopping sales is always good for the pocket, but picking out timeless sale items may prove to be a lot wiser than purchasing that awesome purple turtle neck that will be unwearable come time for Fall/Winter 09.

Have any opinions or views? Post away!

Everyday Essentials - Winter 08/09 Edition

Everyone knows there are essentials that must be at hand at all times during the day when we are out of the house. I will begin with a few must-haves for everyone's busy everyday schedule during this winter season

1. Lip balm - with the frigid weather that comes with the winter season, cracked lips are very common. Kiehl's offers a variety of lip balms, but 2 of them stand out

Kiehl's Balm #1 is a classic that is now available in a variety of scents. My favourites are Mint and Vanilla (Coconut, Mango, Pear, and Cranberry are also available)

Price: $8.50USD
  • consistency is slightly more fluid than Vaseline petroleum jelly
  • has a medium gloss finish - lips will be shiny
  • Mint flavour has a cooling sensation upon application and is my choice among other scents

For those that want to avoid a shiny lip, Kiehl's offers the No-Shine Moisturizing Lip Balm from the Facial Fuel line.

Price: $8.50USD
  • upon application, the lip is left with a matte finish
  • consistency is much drier, much like a chapstick
2. Hand Cream - The cold weather is often a cause for dry hands. However, with the outdoor chill aside, washing hands often or use of sanitizers can leave hands really dry and peely. Here are a few effective hand creams:

Glysomed has become a common household item. This hand cream is thick and lasts quite long as a moisturizer on the hands. Carrying a travel size with you is always a smart idea.

Price: from $2-3 USD depending on location
  • very sticky, and will not be absorbed into skin immediately, so after application, be careful to avoid leaving residue on places you touch

Crabtree & Evelyn are known for their body products and one of their award-winning products is the La Source Hand Therapy Cream. Among the many scents is this one shown above: Sea Air.

Price: $14.00USD
  • a unisex scent
  • consistency is more creamy and less sticky
  • absorbs into skin considerably fast
3. Face Moisturizer - This might surprise some people, but one of the first areas to be affected by the cold weather is your face. Your hands can be covered, your lips can be moistened, but your face is always exposed to the chilling wind. A face moisturizer is important to prevent drying of the skin at all times.

Kiehl's offers a Sodium PCA Oil-free Moisturizer that is light and will not clog pores. This is a good all-purpose face moisturizer for all occasions.

Price: $17.50USD
  • light and easily-absorbed consistency
  • no particular scent

Also from Kiehl's, the Facial Fuel Moisturizer with SPF15 is another alternative for an everyday moisturizer. The formula contains caffeine, which will waken up the skin a little and leave a refreshing feeling upon application.

Price: $20.50USD (2.5oz size)
  • light liquidly cream texture
  • refreshing scent
  • skin feels refreshed upon application (a minty sensation)
4. Essentials Carrying Bag - You can definitely carry all these products in a pocket of your preferred day bag, but if you're one to hate loose objects in your bag, here are some timeless bags to carry your essentials in:

LV offers this sleek Macao Clutch from the Damier Canvas line. It's small enough to fit into your day bag, but large enough to put your essentials in (as well as other essential makeup, ladies).

Price: $575.00USD
Dimensions: 7.9" x 5.1" x 2"

For the ladies out there (or if you don't mind a heart on the bag), there is the Gucci white guccissima leather cosmetic pouch with light gold hardware. My rule is this: try to avoid Gucci canvas products when possible: they often get dirty easily and are very commonly counterfeitted. If you are investing in a quality brand, stick with quality materials.

Price: $245.00USD
Dimensions: 5.5" x 2.7"

If it comes to a cosmetic/toiletries bag, you cannot overlook Prada. With its signature nylon canvas, the Prada Nylon Beauty Case sets the standard for travel essentials bags. The nylon is easy to clean and the design is simple, yet subtle.

Price: $195.00USD
Dimensions: 9" x 5" x 3.75"
